Installing WordPress manually

I’m generally used to installing WordPress through simple scripts. However I need to install it manually with 1 & 1 hosting package as it does not let you upgrade your WP installation if you use their click &build solution. This is quite annoying, however it will be good practice learning how to do it the manual way for future reference!

Updating WordPress using 1&1 click and build

I’m currently working on website design project for a dry cleaning business. My client has purchased a 1&1 started hosting package on which I installed WordPress. I have just discovered there is a WP update available however 1&1 have restrictions so you cannot do the WP 1 click install to update! I have to do this manually through FTP…argh!

Learning Joomla…

I decided to have another crack at using Joomla to develop a site today, having installed and played around with it a year ago, I quickly gave up. However having used SharePoint, a new motivation has developed for me to learn how to manipulate this open source CMS, one of the main reasons being that if I can offer clients a way to manage and update sites I have developed for them – it makes a more cost effective and time efficient solution for both myself and them in the long run.

Some concerns with Joomla include securing the application, customising templates and scoping out its limitations.
